The oh-so-popular search giant Google has recently added another name to the reliable and loved applications and software bundle it offers, for free of course. Sun Microsystems Inc.’s office suite, StarOffice 8, which Sun normally sells for US$70, is free through Google Pack, which is pretty damn cool.
To me it looks like a spin-off of Microsoft Office, but hey, that’s never a bad thing. With microsoft’s damaged popularity and critical sales of windows vista, this pack certainly got updated at the right time for Sun. It allows users to create documents, spreadsheets and presentations. It supports most Microsoft Office formats, except for the new formats in Office 2007.
“It will be interesting to see why Google didn’t choose to include OpenOffice.org, the primary difference between StarOffice and OpenOffice.org being that StarOffice includes some proprietary components like clip-art graphics, fonts, templates and tools for Microsoft Office migration,” according to the Googlesystem blog, which covers news about Google.
Try it out and let us know what you think of the new software.
