ps3, xbox 360 and elite pic
Now this is a real poll and not an attempt to cause a war between two platforms I promise you that, I really do have a dilemma. I recently bought an Xbox 360 and am really happy with the game play and graphics, I must say playing online is bloody awesome. Everything about the 360 is great and would not change it, but and a big BUT “It is so noisy and even more so with an intercooler attached”.

Now here is my thing, my cousin had the Xbox 360 and he swore by it until it broke down (oops), so he decided to take it back and in the end he got a full refund. Now his question is does he buy the Xbox 360 Elite or does he by the Sony Playstation 3; well he opted for the PS3 and now he is trying to convert me.

I have recently played the PS3 and must admit am impressed with the graphics, downsides are the Blu-ray seems a little jumpy to me and there are not as many titles as the 360, but I am still confused. Will my cousin convert me, will you convert me.

Please answer my Sony PS3 & Microsoft Xbox 360 Poll: Please help me decide?

Questions –
1. Do I stick with the Xbox 360?
2. Do I buy the Xbox 360 Elite?
3. Do I buy the Sony Playstation 3?

You should buy the PS3 is not noisy at all, it has awesome Cinema graphics a lot of good games. And coming out soon too Home Xbox Live killer. Plus u will get a free Blu ray player. PS3 all the way…

  2. Steve Jones on August 13th, 2007 4:37 pm

I had to make the same decision a month or so back, when my 360 failed on me (for the 2nd time). After looking at the options, I finally decided to sell the 360 on ebay, and buy a PS3.

Was it the right decision? Without a shadow of doubt. The Blu-Ray movie playback looking stunning on my LCD, the games look fantastic, and everything is quiet and cool, the user interface is slick, and it feels like a hell of a well build machine.

The games are still lacking slightly, but the next 5 months look like soke great stuff instore for the PS3. Sure I will miss Halo3, but I was not overly impressed with the beta, and it’s extremely likely Mass Effect will make it to PS3 eventually anyway.

The upside to PS3 gaming, is MSG4, Gran Turismo 5 and Final Fantasy.

Without a doubt, go for the PS3.

  3. Bob on August 13th, 2007 4:42 pm

Neither, you wait until the new xbox 360 falcon chipset comes out as the elite is just as noisey as the Pro version.

  4. Bob on August 13th, 2007 4:47 pm

    Heres the dilema:

Ps3 is massive, quiet though, has no games but a blu ray player that really doesnt matter right now.

Xbox looks good, pads are great, noisey, loads of great games, cheaper, has live.

At the mo id say xbox, give it a year they may be level…

  5. Steve on August 13th, 2007 4:54 pm

I read recently that combined with the recent price drop in 360s they are also shipping them with hdmi connectors (if hd is that important to you). And yes, wait for the new 65 nm chipsets to come in. Then buy the core system and put the 120gb hard drive on it. then it will be the same as the elite.

  6. Tim on August 13th, 2007 4:56 pm

I say based on noise factor PS3 for sure.. and although the current game library for ps3 is weak come holiday season you will forget you even questioned the game library.. Heavenly Sword, Lair, Stranglehold, Ratchet and Clank Future: ToD, Folklore, Unreal Tournament 3, Haze, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune…

  7. Zeph Greenwell on August 13th, 2007 5:00 pm

If you like playing games, especially if you like playing online, you are best to stay with the 360. I’ve owned one for quite some time and although the loudness of the system has annoyed me at times, most of the time I don’t notice because I’m so drawn in to the online ranked match I’m playing.

If you mostly use your system to watch movies, yeah I’d say PS3. The noise on the 360 is the most annoying when watching a movie. I barely ever watch movies so this is only a small problem for me. Your situation might be different.

If you are totally annoyed with your current 360 you could just try swapping it out for one of the new models. They are rumored to run quieter. I don’t know if this is true, but you could keep your games and continue to play online.

  8. Stein on August 13th, 2007 5:06 pm

I can’t believe you’re even asking this. I have one word for you: HALO 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Comes out September 25.

  9. Luke on August 13th, 2007 5:15 pm

Name one game currently out you will play more than 5 hours of on ps3 and get a ps3. After you figure out you can’t… buy the 360 elite after the new chipset comes out.

  10. Scott M. B. on August 13th, 2007 5:32 pm

Well after my second Xbox crapped out on me I am going to go for the ps3 myself.
As was stated the elite is just as noisy and I find it very weak that they(Microsoft)would release the elite and then bring out a core with the same specs seems like a cash grab. Plus the ps3 can have the hdd swapped with a regular laptop hdd’ 350gigs here I come.
Now Bob the size difference is minor I find it hard to believe that that little of a difference could matter to anyone unless you wanted to put something on top which is a no-no.
Now I have 50+ games for my ps2 so the games thing is no prob as I am stoked to play shadow of the colossus again plus many others as well as some great ps3 titles coming out real soon (Liar for one maybe heavenly sword?).
Now that goofy Xbox live, maybe its because I live in Canada but I paid for a year of live and barely ever used it other than to buy a couple of games which are gone with my broken box now. So I really don’t believe live is a selling point as the majority of friends with an Xbox feel the same way. There’s no point to paying (In the states I guess you can download TV shows and movies but not up north?)

  11. Jay on August 13th, 2007 5:34 pm

I have both xbox 360 and the PS3.

Love xbox 360 just for the sheer fact there are so many games out there but i prefer the PS3 and I wish Sony would get their act together.

    WHY?????

Build, true HD, quiet, ……….if and when the games come out i think we will see something special.

If Sony had the games I don’t think there would be much contest but at the mo I’ll carry on playing on the 360.

  12. James Hanson on August 13th, 2007 5:50 pm

I wouldn’t do either system, the PS3 is almost dead in the water, with ever decreasing support from the thirds, soon it will be like the GameCube, supported almost entirely by first party games.

The 360 is worse, 1/3 of all the damned systems die! That is not in any way an acceptable number. I would never advise getting one until such time as all the defects in the 360 are corrected, I am stunned people are buying them, despite the price drop - it’s complete b******* to have a machine that has a 33 percent chance of being a useless hunk of plastic.

I’ll be going for a Wii this year, to get the new Fire Emblem, play RE4 and get ready for Mario Kart.

  13. Jose on August 13th, 2007 5:53 pm

Long ago I bought the xbox 360 just to have something to play with while the PS3 came out.
More than a year latter I still use the 360 and Im looking for a buyer for my PS3 since I dont use it anymore.
The PS3 is a great piece of hardware, but without good software.
And also the control of the PS3 is very unconfortable.

  14. Zeph Greenwell on August 13th, 2007 5:55 pm

Its the online multiplayer that sells xbox live Scott and that is the same everywhere.

Even though the PS3 will eventually get Home, they don’t have anything to compare to Xbox Live now. Also, just because Sony is promoting Home as better than xbox live doesn’t mean it will be.

Online multiplayer is central to the design of the Xbox 360 and if you like playing games against real people online the best way to do it is on a Xbox 360. There are more games to play online and more people playing them online on the Xbox 360 and Home is not going to change that.

  15. Tony on August 13th, 2007 5:55 pm

Just buy a Wii… Its small, quiet, has lots of games and its inexpensive…
    1. Do I stick with the Xbox 360?
    Sure, (unless it breaks)
    2. Do I buy the Xbox 360 Elite?
Maybe later( when your current 360 breaks)
    3. Do I buy the Sony Playstation 3?
Nah… that thing is going down like the Titanic…
And in regards to Blu-Ray or HD-DVD I wont buy any of those to formats until its absolutely clear which will become the standard… I don’t want to have to re-buy my movie collection again if either format fails… Besides, I’m starting to think both formats will fail, people are going to start to buy their movies online and Download them into their PC, DVR/TiVo/Apple TV type of devises without having to worry who the hell is going to win a format war…

  16. Paul on August 13th, 2007 6:16 pm

the 360 has a pretty damn good line up this holiday. mass effect, halo 3 and bioshock are must haves. with that in mind, even if heavenly sword turns out to be really good and not a god of war clone then you have to come to the conclusion that the 360 is where you want to be if your a gamer. they’ve got a growing catalougue of great games and the console is cheaper. Also now that GTA 4 and devil may cry are also coming out on the 360 theres no real reason to pick the PS3 over the 360. all the football games are running at 30 fps on the PS3 and 60 on the 360, multi-format titles are generally better on the 360 due do it being the lead sku and so programmed with 360 hardware in mind, there are more varied, better and a larger quantity of games on the 360 and that doesnt look like its going to change any time soon. its not a hard decision

  17. Paul on August 13th, 2007 6:18 pm

oh and Jay what are you talking about, ‘true hd’ ?! the premium and elite skus of the 360 both have HDMI now

  18. Elliot on August 13th, 2007 6:27 pm

As a ex-Xbox 360 owner, and a new PS3 owner, I have no regrets. Blu-Ray is awesome! But I will have to say that I was playing on a CRT TV with my Xbox, and recent bought a Samsung 46in LCD and because of that, I went with the PS3 for Blu-Ray and future games.

  19. Keaegan on August 13th, 2007 6:29 pm

Iy’s a tough call, both have there ups and downs:

xbox 360: ups are the amount of games out now, and what you get to play THIS year, and now. Halo 3, bioshock, mass effect, just for starters.
As far as the hardware issues, since they are out there, i can only suggest advice: invest in a plan the store u buy from offers (may not be available in your location), or plan to wait for your repair. Buy an intercooler/fan (one of the pelican USB ones, never trusted the nyko that accepts the input from the power cable. Also look at your setup and see if there is a different place for the 360 to sit that will mask noise more.

PS3: Get this if you want to watch blu ray till the end of the year, and then start playing games (unless your hardcore genres are FPS and motocross right now). Also, be prepared to wait increasingly longer periods of time for the games you want to play. I was interested in lair, which was supposed to come out this summer, but got pushed to the holidays, and GTA IV, and a number of other titles.
Be prepared for the convenience and pain of bluetooth. The controllers have gotten better, but there were numerous issues reported and still occasional reports of the things losing connections during games (some people still complain, but it seems to have lessened, apathy or fixed?). Also remember the number of different issues the PS2 had and still has, as it is what dreams may come for the PS3 hardware wise.
Also, just because it doesn’t “break”, doesn’t mean it doesn’t lock up. I frequent game stores constantly and have only seen the PS3 working twice. Since I go twice a month at least, thats quite a few times. I have also had my friends that bought one tell me that they have had it lock up in games multiple times (just like a 360 can).

Another thing to remember is that consumer electronics usually are solid (especially if thats all that a company makes), so you MOST LIKELY won’t have the PS3 “break” on you, but if it does, and it is outside of the warranty period, Sony does have a good track record of not caring. This is where the peace of mind of the 3 year warranty comes into play. As much as people complain, the program seems almost like something Apple Computer has done for its repair extension programs. The point of these programs is admitting that there is an issue, and then the hard part is biting the bullet and creating a repair program to help the people that bought the product. Apple has had the best customer service 7 years and the highest repair markings for almost as long (even with these repair extension programs in place).

As far as xbox live, and the previous guys comments, when my first 360 broke (I’m on my 2nd, I had one of those plans I was talking about so they just swapped it out) the items that had to be redownloaded were linked to my xbox live account, and available for download again. So if he wanted to, he cold get the items back (at least in the US, I don’t live in Canada). Also, don’t expect to see sony catching up to xbox live. Sony = hardware, Microsoft = Software. The only things missing from xbox live are the things not enough people have asked for.

Do you have enough games to slate your thirst? Are the games that your playing the ones you already beat? Do you buy a games console to play games or to watch movies, or both? Do you have an HDTV?

The games will eventually comes out on the PS3 that make the investment worth it, but most of them won’t be this year. Also, developers seem to be splitting on who thinks the PS3 is “easy” to program for. With development costs for the 360 paling in comparison to the stellar amount that has to be paid for the PS3 version of any game, we will start to see less of the smaller studios releasing on the platform, just because they can’t afford to make a 2nd game from the ground up (b/c if they don’t, the games don’t look good).

To end this, I wanted to tell you that I will eventually get a PS3, after 2 things happen: the price is 400 or lower, and a game that I can’t play on the 360 comes out that drops my jaw. I don’t care if there is a blu ray player or not, sony is punishing me for them wanting to “future proof” their console. It has no bearing, and soon the 360 will allow hard drive use for their games (sorry core users, it will happen eventually, get a HD), we will see many of the huge differences between the consoles go away, and here is why:

At the core of the 360’s are 3 3.2GHz G5 power PC processors. If you don’t know what those are, they are the old processors from Mac’s (see apple). What many people forget, is that these are the processors that many game dev houses use to make games, and that in that case they can be written easier for use of the processors.
At the core of the PS3 is the cell, which originally was 1 3.2GHz G5 power pc processor, and 7 custom processors that receive commands from mister G5. That may sound like apples to apples, but its far from it. The capabilities of using 8 processors is a massive amount of data can be processed, but it also means that you have to write special things like “this process goes to sub processor one, and has to wait until sub processor 2 finishes its job before going to the next instruction set”. That is a daunting task for someone, and starts to make sense on why blu ray is necessary now: they couldn’t fit games for the PS3 on DVD9 simply because the instruction set is too massive.

Don’t get me wrong, I think its great, but it is another thing that is gonna make me not able to play games on their console soon, since the 360 version is generally done before the PS3.

I hope I didn’t babble to much for you, and I hope this helps.

  20. jack on August 13th, 2007 6:36 pm

dude,wtf.ps3 for sure.for just $20 more u will get a blu ray player which has already won the next hd format.i was owner of both the console (360 nad ps3).i sold my 360 on craigslist coz i found most of the 360 exclusive can be played on my p.c for free without paying the live fee.(like gears of war, bioshock, almost all the 360 games.)but u cant play ps3 game on pc right”.
and from my experince i loved halo 1,2 but now halo 3 is like same experince with better graphic and sound.and ppl say there is no any halo killer ,well there is on august 28 that game is warhawk.i was on the beta test and seriously i stopped playing halo 2 after the online fun i got from warhawk.its a killer ace game for sony.about not having enough game on ps3 i did agree 6 months ago but i do have plenty of game to play now.well this is just my thought about games and ps3.i dont wanna piss some 360 fanboy.

  21. Bill on August 13th, 2007 6:45 pm

You said you like the games, love the online play, and are happy with the 360. You’ve answered you question already.
With a three year warranty, I wouldn’t (and don’t) fear it breaking down. As for the noise, it isn’t THAT loud, And I’ve owned mine for over a year, and with daily use - It still runs great!

  22. console player on August 13th, 2007 6:45 pm

Since the Xbox 360 hat 3 years of warrenty I wouldn’t care about the defect rate. The repair-process will be improved steadily so that defect rates even of old boxes will be reduced (everything else ist too costly for MS)

Well so the only decisive point are the games. So decide if you prefer Final Fantasy and MGS, or if you like Halo, Mass Effect and GTA with bonus content.

[for me it is clearly the xbox 360, but everybody should decide for himself whicht games he likes --- and don't listen do silly fanboys ;-) ]

  23. Scott M. B. on August 13th, 2007 6:51 pm

Yah I just never bothered with the playing online tried it but not for me.

But can anyone tell me about the quality of ps2 games on the ps3 because that would be the only reason for me to pick one up (for now) ooh how about the ability to have all my burned movies on the ps3 or would I have to convert them?

This question really is important to me as I stated before now my second box is dead and if I can’t decide to buy a ps3 then I am giving up and buying a ps2 :( I do enjoy my 360 this is no stupid fanboy sh!t I just really don’t agree with the way Microsoft has gone about everything. And all I play on the box anymore is NHL07 and Oblivion. Oh plus texas hold em and assult heroes.

  24. Seth on August 13th, 2007 7:06 pm

Buy the 360. You stated you like the games and th eonline play. Besides you can now bu the premium for $349.00 and don’t listen to the “True HD” crap. Anything 720p and up is HD and both can output 1080p through HDMI (new Xboxes). Plus it probably doesn’t even matter because most tv’s aren’t 1080p and even the ones that are are too small for a visible difference over the average sitting distance. (look it up) 1080p is largely a marketing gimmick and I’d wait until the next-gen dvd format war is over before you make that a consideration for a new system.

If noise really bothers you and you want a reliable system then wait until the 65nm 360’s come out.

Buying either system is an act of faith.
Xbox you have faith that it won’t break.
PS3 you have faith that blu-ray will win and that there will actually be more than a handful of games for it that you can’t play on the 360.

  25. Sled on August 13th, 2007 7:12 pm

PS3 all the way… Games are thin right now (though I highly recommend the current exclusives “Resistance: Fall of Man” and “Motorstorm”), but there are some more great games coming soon.

Blu-ray looks awesome. It’s quiet. It doesn’t blue-ring-of-death on me. It has a generic 2.5″ SATA150 drive that you can replace without voiding the warrenty (just pop the HDD cover off the side, take out one screw, no proprietary Microsoft drives, bah). It’s got everything you could need, Wi-Fi, etc. Free online play (not as grand as Xbox, but still free, for now).

Can’t beat that for $499 (60 GB version).

I have no regrets about mine, even with the small game selection… that’ll come in time.

  26. g.e. on August 13th, 2007 7:24 pm

    ANSWER HERE!!

Keep the 360 till the PS3 game library is better!
If he gets rid of his 360 now, all he’ll do with is PS3 is “fold”… oh and host imaginary tea parties on “Home”.

Wait till FF 13, MGS4.. and whatever PS3 exclusive left in the sony cupboards come out… until then the PS3 is just paper weight.

  27. CJHike on August 13th, 2007 7:29 pm

Had and X360 - it broke, again.

Bought a PS3 - Would never go back it is in my opinion a much better rig & less than 1% defect rate compared to MS 33%.

    PS3!!!!

  28. Pavan Iyer on August 13th, 2007 7:53 pm

First off, I personally do not think that purchasing an Xbox 360 Elite is worth it right now, considering that (with current Premiums coming with the HDMI port) you are paying around $100 dollars more just for the black finish and 120 GB of space. If that much space is necessary, than go for it, but I don’t think that it is worth paying $100 more that.

I currently have a PS3 and have had it for over 6 months with no problems. I have no problem with the 360, as I have played it many times at my friends house. It has great games, but it seems to be only appealing to the shooter genre fans with Halo 3, Bioshock, etc. However, it has been seen that the multi-platform games like Madden 08 have been proven inferior on the PS3 and run smoother on the 360. There isn’t a huge difference, but a difference none the less. However, Rock Band is favoring the PS3 slightly with the wireless bundle. I do think that the graphics on the PS3 are on par, if not better, than the 360.

PS3 does not really have a lot of games at the moment, but the games available are pretty good. Motorstorm IS fun, and Resistence: Fall of Man is also very appealing with the single player campaign AND has outstanding online play. The PS3 online is very reliable and, most importantly, FREE. With the upcoming online game Warhawk, you can not say that the PS3 online is that much inferior to XBL. In fact, they may soon be level. I know that some 360 fanboys are gonna bash me for saying that, but that’s what I believe.

As for movie playback, PS3 is excellent. Being able to play normal DVDs along with the next-gen Blu-ray is great. 360 also has the same ability, but I don’t think that it can take the place as your only peripheral for your TV. Both the Premium and Elite can use the add-on HD-DVD drive, but the total cost will run you more the PS3. However, most should wait until this whole HD format war blows over. I do think that Blu-ray was worth the price though. Also, I think that it’s cool how I can download, save, and view/listen to videos, music, and pictures. It can come in handy during parties and is fun to view pictures with the slide show picture. On the other hand, the 360 has the same abilities and you can pretty much do the same thing. The only thing is that the PS3 is dead silent (even with the intercooler), whereas the 360 is noisy.

All in all, the 360 has a wide variety of games out RIGHT NOW. The PS3 does not have a lot right now, but over the next three months, there will be a plethora of great games coming out, including the afor mentioned Warhawk, and will come to be on the same level as 360 games. Also, Blu-ray seems to be coming out with bigger and better titles right now and in the future. The 360 may be a good buy now (price drop), but that 33% failure rate is a bit much for me, even with a 3 year warranty, compared to a less than 1% (.12 to be exact) rate of the PS3. The PS3 is definately a better buy for a solid long-term investment. However, I don’t think that I would go for the 80 GB bundle (no backwards compatiblity) right now and go for the 60 GB. Sony has a great long term plan and will be at the same level as 360. The 360 is great, and it is your decision to hold out on the PS3. As a PS3 owner (not fanboy), I say it is definately worth it. Sorry my post was so long!

  29. Munk on August 13th, 2007 8:17 pm

    Go with the Xbox 360

The latest repair to my Xbox 360 (yes, it has been twice that I have sent it in) now has the better heatsync and is a little quieter. I think they put something around the DVD drive to quiet it down but can’t confirm it.

There are way too many great games out on the Xbox 360 and the PS3 has lost all of its cool exclusives. The graphics on the PS3 have not been proven to be better and in fact have always lost to 360 in comparisons (Madden, Fight Night, Virtua Fighter…..). Games are what matter and now if the box stays stable then it’s a no brainer to me at least.

  30. Nick on August 13th, 2007 8:37 pm

Jack your an idiot. Blu ray hasn’t won anything yet. High def DVD’s all together still only account for like 3% of the DVD market. As long as people are buying both blu ray and hd dvd there won’t be a winner. What you aren’t considering is that it is a price issue and we all know that beta max lost due to the porn industry and the same might happen again. taiwan is the only country that is producing blu ray porn. Really I am convinced that Dual format players will win out because they cater to all consumers. Until then I’ll enjoy my HD DVD’s.
Xbox all the way. It is all about games xbox is standing by there product defects will soon cease to exist and 3 year warranty support will tied you over fine. PS 3 home shouldn’t even be brought up. Home is the only partially original thought PS 3 has got, not to mention, it has only been a whisper this year and it is due out this quarter. Home is not proven to be successful what so ever. Sony is good about making things sound great then falling on there faces. Halo 3 is going to be sick and so is Mass effect and Bioshock. Everyone is complaining about noise yet I don’t ever hear my xbox? Oh well. Will Ps 3 eventually be good? It definately has potential, but if they get beat up on much more it may not matter. You have to spend money to make it and if you don’t make money you can’t spend it. Let’s face it though… The market is big enough for all competitors it’s just a matter of choice witch is what is so great about this current gen. As long there is competition then games will keep getting better and better! See all you xboxer’s on Halo 3! Player co-op woot woot.

  31. Scott M. B. on August 13th, 2007 9:00 pm

So 360 is better now for games everyone seems to agree if sony can get there sh!t together soon then they will be even.

So far if you want a hd video player sony is cheaper and if you have an hdmi input on your tv then sony is good choice
until falcon core and premiums come out with hdmi (but no hddvd drive biult in?).

GTA4 will have bonus content for both consoles so thats no biggie (Well wait to see how it controls for ps3 tho).

It just comes down to how the backward compatability works out for me so if anyone could shed some light on that for me would be much appreciated since I have heard of some video issues with some of the older titles.

  32. imaballa on August 13th, 2007 9:03 pm

Yes, its about the game, since this is an investment you have to think long term follow my logic.

You want to play the MAXIMUM amount of great games out there buying a PS3 will be the best way to go because you will be able to play:
    1) Most of the 3rd Party games on PS3

    2) PS3 1st party exclusives: Lair, Killzone, Heavenly Sword, Little Big Planet, Infamous

    3) PS3 3rd part exclusives: Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Haze, Unreal Tournament 3

    4) You can play most of the great Xbox games, on the PC or eventually will: Halo, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Viva Pinata

If you don’t get a PS3 you will never get a chance to play any of the great 1st party, and 3rd party exclusive games.
Halo 3 will eventually come out on PC just like Halo1 & 2.

360 my freind, with the new falcon chips coming this month and the games that are coming out to the 360 will be on top for a long time to come, ps3 exclusives are dropping from 3rd parties and with the rumor that wont go away about mgs4 and ff13 coming over to i see no reason to get a ps3, i was in the same shoes as u once but i feel i made the right choice a load of my mates came over to play on it and they all went out to buy one”2were sony fanboys” the games speak for them selves , e3 best games were all on the 360 and most of them exclusives to, oh and to answer ur question above only the 360 version of gta is have downloadable content, rockstar sed them selves the full experiance will be on the 360

  34. XboxLenny on August 13th, 2007 9:22 pm

Dont sell yourself short. The 360 is the way to go. There is a 3 year warrinty on the Xbox 360, also they have fixed the problems with a new Falcon chipset, its cooler and quieter.

As for online gaming, Xbox live is the way to go, PSN will never be as good as XBL, the XBL arcade games, I have had my issues with the 360 too, but its the choice over a PS3. if you want the best online experience its Xbox live.

Nothing wrong with the PS3, but not worth it and i want better online gaming, so Xbox live is the way to go, that alone sold me. I also own a WII and PSP.

    Listen to your cousin.

  36. johnnybodkin on August 13th, 2007 9:40 pm

i have both a Xbox 360 and a PS3, yet after having both my impressions of the consoles have greatly changed….

When i got the PS3 i was impressed cause it was sleek and the motion and touch sensor ( on button) was cool, yet after a while you realize the term “half baked” is an understatement when it comes to anything online ( with the exception of the internet browser). The fan is pretty noisy as well….when playing a blu ray movie, the fan is somewhat annoying at times. The overall multimedia of the Ps3 is somewhat better than the 360, yet it pails in comparison in all other departments.

Since getting my 360 last christmas ive had no console failures. The games are amazing, and when comparing them to my PS3 they are noticable smoother and have much more background detail… the fan is annoying, but so is the PS3’s so that factor is null and void. Halo 3 beta really made the 360 a better choice as a console for me as well as the plethora of other games available…since i got my 360 ive 12 xbox games and 2 PS3 games….

So, if your into a console for the games and multiplayer experiance, Xbox 360 is the clear winner ( for now); but, if your into a multimedia monster PS3 is what you should buy.

  37. papalazarou on August 13th, 2007 9:46 pm

Well if you already have a good library of 360 games, stick with what you got. Anyways, if you own a different console to your cousin then you both have access to the best of both worlds right?

  38. Eye Of Darkness on August 13th, 2007 10:01 pm

Dude, its all about the analog placement on the controller. remember ps1 and fps hurt the hands. ps3 and fps is no different. go ergonomic go xbox 360.

  39. Moocow on August 13th, 2007 10:02 pm

    PS3 Duhh!!!!

    reasons:

-Xbox syestems dont have hdtv you have to buy an add on.200$

-Xbox360 will come out with a new system sooner than you think.

-You can turn your ps3 into a computer if you want

    -ps3 graphics way better

  40. nynja on August 13th, 2007 10:09 pm

    I agree with ‘imaballa’

It is difficult to argue price as the PS3 will run you more on your initial purchase and the 360 will run you more over time IF you wish to pick up the HD-DVD add-on or intend to play your games online. Essentially, both consoles balance each other out in price (if you exclude repairs for the 360 now that MS is extended the warrenty).

But for me, this has always been the first and main reason to purchase a Playstation over an Xbox = exclusive games. Microsoft does not seem to understand this as their ‘exclusive’ games appear on other platform(s) PCs and Macs (ie: Gears of War coming to Mac). True these games are ‘exclusive’ to the Xbox 360 in the console department, yet when one is able to experience the same or possibly better game on a PC - why would you go out to buy an Xbox 360? For XBox Live? So again, when I can get Windows Live (essentially same service on PC), why do I buy an Xbox 360?

Only one reason remains in my opinion - the controller. Rumble or not? (though Sony is rumored to have their updated rumble controller released this year) Motion or not? It would depend on which controller you feel most comfortable with when gaming. Now, another may argue that the feel of the controller should not matter as you could always opt out for a controller more to your liking via 3rd party manufactorer.

Considering you already have a computer or intend on buying one in the near future - I say, ask yourself these questions before buying either PS3 or 360:

    1. I’m I buying this for the games or the HiDef experience? Are multimedia options important to you? - if you said HiDef or multimedia options are important; go buy the PS3 right now, you will NOT regret it.
    2. What is your favorite game genre? What are your favorite games/series? If you said FPS ALL THE WAY, go get the Xbox right now.
    3. If on PS3, can you play this on PC? If on 360, can you play this on PC?
    4. Which controller feels most comfortable to you? (is rumble/motion controls important?)
    5. Do you already own a PSP?

Asking myself these questions made it very easy to decide which console to buy and I could not be happier with my PS3.

  41. Ryan on August 13th, 2007 10:10 pm

    Buy ps3

  42. imaballa on August 13th, 2007 10:38 pm

  43. Falkenad on August 13th, 2007 11:37 pm

I think that the whole commotion on the supposed hardware failure of the 360’s is a very vocal minority. The Xbox 360’s at the stores have all the reliability one could possibly want with the newest hardware revision- the CPU is now attached to the motherboard with resin, the cooler, quieter 65nm processors are coming into the stock channel, the revised heatsink, and quiet dvd drives, and HDMI that now ship with all premium and elite 360’s. Graphics wise, I am more impressed with the power ATI has provided to the 360’s graphics chip- and developers recently have made great use of it. With the deluge of fantastic xbox titles coming out within the next few months, I would choose a 360 and use the money you save to go towards the games.

  44. Wavestone on August 13th, 2007 11:43 pm

Here in Canada, you can buy two 360 cores, an extra controller and a game or two for the same price as a PS3. I think that the interface of the 360 is more intuitive, and the online support for the xbox is an entire order of magnitude greater than that of the playstation 3. One could get the ps3 to play movies and search photos, but why when everyone has a computer and dedicated players to do the job extremely well already?

  45. walkealy on August 13th, 2007 11:47 pm

Ivan don’t be such a bias sony fanboy. Each system is good in its own way but its up to the gamer. Make a valid point in why the ps3 is better than the competition and I won’t bug you.

“You should buy the PS3 is not noisy at all, it has awesome Cinema graphics a lot of good games”

Now im not sure what games your talking about for the ps3 that are good and im sorry to see that a system’s noise output detirmine whether you buy it. But on to the question….. id recommend anything but the ps3 because of it’s poor 1st party support and it’s expense. Heck just build a pc. Check out gamespot.com to check out great games for each system under top games.

  46. PS3 all the way on August 14th, 2007 12:13 am

Are you guys NUTTS? Only reason Xbox 360 has more games is Xbox360 came out 1 year earlier than PS3. It’s just matter of time. I had Xbox360 but after 2 time failings I just bought PS3. And I just love my PS3. I can play I can watch Blue ray movies, and i can access internet. I don’t need PC any more. Ooh did Imantion FREE online gaming….

  47. anthony on August 14th, 2007 1:51 am

go with the console that has the most promising games to you. everyone likes different games, so only you can really decide.

if you decide on a 360, though, you should wait until the holiday season starts. there will be bundles where the 360 Premium/Elite both come with Forza Motorsport 2 and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. hardware issues should be taken care of in those consoles as far as them overheating etc.

  48. Lendoris on August 14th, 2007 1:56 am

I would stick with the 360
The ps3 is gonna have some sweet games, their rpg selection is flawless. But I can play those games with gamefly and a friends ps3 once through then i’m done with it. The thing that I find attractive about the 360 is the online gameplay.

    GET RID OF THE INTERCOOLER,

those things kill 360s. Ive had two 360s since launch and one was stolen. You would be surprised how many people’s 360s break and its because they overheat or don’t have enough power. What the intercooler system does is suck power away from the system which causes major power failure in crucial parts.

Also, do not use a extension cord or surge protector. Plug the 360 directly into the wall socket making sure no other appliances can share power that the 360 needs.

If you called a Microsoft employee at customer support they will agree with these two strategies to keeping your 360 alive.

My brothers 360 broke down, and he had a cooling system attached, Microsoft fixed the problem free of charge and told us not to put the intercooler back on the system. It’s worked flawlessly ever since.

If your asking why does the intercooler exist, well their third party devices.

  49. abcps3 on August 14th, 2007 2:56 am

The PS3 could still have more games “PS3 all the way” because as you can see the Wii came out around the same time and has a plethora of more games than the PS3 and the 360. The games are great but there are not many because they take longer to develop and you get the best out of the games because you get to see the developers at their best. The PS3 will get more games in a wide variety. The 360 is good as well but leans more to the side of FPS fans. I think that 33% failure is a bit much because, even with the warranty, I don’t to keep replacing a 360 until the warranty is out (exaggeration). As you can see though, just about everybody that owns a PS3 does not regret at it all. The price is steep, but it is worth the money AND is still a great deal. PS3 is worth it, but keeping the 360 is fine as well.
P.S. A third option is the Wii, but the thing with the Wii is that the “cool” factor of the gameplay can only last so long and everyone I know that owns a Wii says that it is near there TV picking up dust and only play it every so often when friends are over. I have nothing against the Wii, it is just that I think the games on the Wii can get old fast, which is why it has so many games to buy. Anyways, good luck with your decision.

  50. abcps3 on August 14th, 2007 2:58 am

Oh yeah, free online on the PS3 is a major plus, even though I don’t see how Xbox Live is worth paying for.

  51. blaqdeath on August 14th, 2007 3:02 am

I have had all versions of the 360 and I currently had the 360 elite. Everyone complains about the noise, but my 360 is quiet. I have not had any problems with any xbox 360. O had the core and someone stole it. I bought the 20 gig and traded it in for the 360 for the hdmi and 120 gig hd. I have been very pleased. I think a lot of people are jumping on this “its too loud bandwagon”. Most of theoverheating issues are probaly caused by leaving the xbox in an enclosed area with little to no ventilation. All electronics state that they should have room for air circulation. I tell you……get the 360. Look at the facts…99 percent of the games are better on the 360, both in looks and playability. I am not a fan of neither xbox or ps3. But, my friend has the ps3 and I have the 360, the good thing about the ps3 is blu ray.

  52. Matt on August 14th, 2007 3:32 am

hey listen I dont think ps3 is a good choice because game publishers has said that it is way to hard to make games for the ps3,they said it is so easy to make games for the xbox 360 so there is hardly going to be games for the ps3 in the next two years or so and dont give us the xbox 360 has been out for an year crap so what it did have the best line up of games for the xbox 360 there was only two for the ps3 so that year crap doesnt matter, hey man go with the xbox 360 all the way,and even know that psn is free it sucks look just recently people that bought stuff off of the marketplace on psn was not working so they had to refund everyones stuff they bought on psn.

  53. RockHard on August 14th, 2007 3:57 am

Microsoft doesn’t deserve your money much less any loyalty. Mind you I bought an xbox 360. The first one right out of the box would not work. The next day I had to get another one from gamestop. Along with it I got the extra warranty. This luckily worked right out of the box but my games would freeze just when I was nearing the finishing line. Every once in awhile I would get the 3 rings of death and have to pull the plug to get it going again. In short the 360 turned out to be and is a very unreliable system. I don’t care if you’ve got the best library in the world; if the system can’t play them it’s as if they have no library. I ended the misery by selling the worthless piece of plastic and cheap parts on Ebay. Some people don’t realize (by now) that what microsoft rushed into the market in order to be first was a beta version of a system that was untested and put together with any parts they could gather from the shelves. It should never have been released. Their system should have been released this holiday season.

I now have the PS3 and I’m extremely pleased with it. It’s like selling your Pinto and getting yourself a Jaguar or a Rolls Royce. The PS3 is quality inside out. It’s got everything and more which MS is now trying to make up for. Too late in my book after screwing so many gamers. The Playstation Network (PSN) is free, you can surf the web if you wish and it’s got a more sophisticated organization, look, style and appeal….professional you might say. The 360 menus look like a box of 64 crayons thrown together without an afterthought.

I got the 60gb version because it’s got the emotion engine which allows you to play PS1 and PS2 games. A huge and important reason to get this version. If not the 80gb is excellent if older games don’t matter to you.

A failure rate of 30-50 percent for the xbox 360 is reason enough to stay away from it much less buying it used or on Ebay. While the PS3 and the Wii are both under 1%.

Yes, the PS3 has just started it’s online and it will get better and so will it’s library of games. Remember the PS3 is not even a year old yet.

In closing quality and reliabilty should determine the success of a video game console…the games will come in time.

  54. Dean on August 14th, 2007 4:39 am

The general rule is if your a stupid yank that get sucked into all the microsoft marketing nosense then yes then 360 is for you, but if you know a bit more about games machines then go for the ps3.i think its quite obvious the ps3 will be on par with 360 in the next 9 months, give it two years and we will all be playing ps3.

  55. Nick on August 14th, 2007 4:56 am

Imaballa your also an idiot for starters the hd dvd add-on is 179.00 a premium xbox 360 is 350.00. That is 529.00 for a console with more exclusives and better online support. the ps3 did drop to 499 only to clear out the 60 gig version, then back up to 599 so still cheaper than ps3. Yes the ps3 controller is terrible also. Two more corrections Imballa: Ps3 has better graphics??? How old are you? That’s idiotic! Gears of War is still the best looking game to date! Both have HD graphics. Even older 360 only have component out, but who cares because my television does 1080p through component and a lot now days do. Also UNREAL TOURNAMENT is not Sony exclusive, it just comes out a little earlier! Not to mention final fantasy and metal gear may not remain Sony exclusive. Look at it this way… What ever us xbox gamers want we get, because Microsoft as almost unlimited funds to throw out there to give us. PS3 free online gaming… If I offered you a free 27 in std def tv and you had the option to take it or throw down $4.80 a month for 40 in 1080p tv what would you take? That is what I think about sony’s precious online gaming. Xbox did it first and they will always have that experience. Do you ps3 fans realize that us Xbox fans all started out as PS2 fans? Why do you think we switched to xbox when it came out? Microsoft has strived to give us what we want even if they lose money. Sony has always tried to dictate what we should like… Look at beta max and blu ray. The offer no choice they tell you either you do this or nothing. just like hdmi they don’t want anything else to be used so they disable 1080p capabilities through component cables on there TV’s. That’s why I bought a samsung. They don’t even offer an extended manufacturers warranty on the ps3 it is only covered 6 months and thats it. You can’t even buy one a warranty through sony for the ps3. everything they have given the gamers this generation is ripped off… the motion sensitive controller that the wii had, the guide button on the controller from xbox, also there will be achievements like on xbox in ps home, arcade games online purchases and media download from xbox, built in hard drive from xbox, and the list goes on. basically my point is xbox is listening to what we want and trying to fix any problems it has, but sony does what it wants and thinks that brand loyalty, since it lead last gen, will win out. don’t be tools, don’t be brainwashed, and don’t believed over hyped, prerendered cgi videos of games to come will look that way when you play them because sony are deceivers… Anything else?

  56. Quinton on August 14th, 2007 6:56 am

I think you should get a PS3. The main reason is for the games arriving in future, Metal Gear Solid 4 looks to be one of those games that (usually) appears only once every 5 years, like Zelda OoT and Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy 13 and VS 13 are 2 more games of a legendary series. Grand Turismo 5 and Tekken 6 are 2 more games of a legendary series. There are also many excellent new IPs such as Heavenly Sword, Resistance, Folklore, Unchartered Drakes Fortune and Little Big Planet. HOME is a virtual world redefining online capabilities.
I really recommend you watch the SONY E3 2007 press conference as it should be very informative. On the other hand you could, quote from Microsoft spokesperson: “go in hard and go in deep”, with the Microsoft conference.
The Sony conference can be found at major gaming websites.
The other positives of the ps3 are the mind blowing graphics, the Blu-ray and the power of cell processing.
Free online, reliable hardware and a noise free system are yet more good reasons to buy a ps3. Shop wisely consumer.

  57. Sith on August 14th, 2007 7:36 am

The reason the PS3 only has a 6 month warranty is because it doesn’t brake. Having a 3 year warranty isn’t exactly a great thing. It means that the company doesn’t trust the reliability of there own product. The 360 was poorly designed. It’s stupid if you ask me. Once Halo 3 comes out every 360 owner will be putting hundreds of hours on their consoles. You and I know what that means. 3 rings of death. If there were pissed off gamers before, just wait until the system starts crashing on Halo 3. And the PS3 graphics are better. Look at Uncharted.

  58. Paul on August 14th, 2007 9:42 am

Go for the PS3 for sure. It’s quiet, reliable, and very well built. It’s slick in everything it does, it look stylish. There are some great games comming up.

I sold my 360, and bought a PS3, it was the best move I ever made.

Do I care that I will miss Halo 3? Nope not at all. I got Killzone 2, Unreal Tourment 2007, and MGS4 to look forward to. In the meantime, I already got some great games (both instore and on PSN), with some great titles pre-xmas.

PS. Anyone that thinks the 360 has a 3 year warranty has been fooled by Microsoft PR. It’s only 3yr on RROD failures. All other faults are 90 days (or 1 yr depending where you live).

If you unit does not turn on after 13 months, Microsoft will charge you $130 to fix it, as it’s not a RROD issue.

  59. Mike Morgan on August 14th, 2007 9:48 am

PS3. No contest. It’s the only TRUE HD console. The 360 has HD-Addon, with a HDMI afterthought, and a HD DVD drive that connects via USB, and does not support ICT (subject to DVD downscaling, when the movie studios implement it next year).

Anyway, HD DVD is all but dead anyway.

    My reasoning.

The 360 is fundamentaly flawed, in design and specifiction, but has some games. The hardware issues are unlikely to be fixed anytime soon, and the system will always be crippled by DVD9 and lack of HDD in the core systems, even if they try and equip the later systems with these extras. The 65nm Falcon chip runs faster than the current chip, so older Xboxes will run newer games slower :-( Microsoft will expect you to buy a new Xbox360 to play the latest Xbox360 games it seems.

The PS3 has everything you need for next gen gaming, but titles are still thin on the ground. This problem will be a non issue in 4 months time (R&C, UT2007, Haze, Drakes Fortune, MGS4, Killzone2, Gran Turismo 5 and so on). The PS3 problems will fade.

  60. Charles on August 14th, 2007 11:41 am

Get a 360 because if it breaks down you will be back up and running in about 3-4 weeks and you will still have tons of games to play. Or you can Buy a PS3 and keep getting game delays that are pushed back by 3-6 months and maybe even a year.

  61. Charles on August 14th, 2007 11:47 am

Also the Bioshock demo is sooo Beautiful. Also Splinter Cell will be a 360 Exclusive because a complex AI like the one in the 360 IS NOT POSSIBLE ON THE PS3.

  62. Charles on August 14th, 2007 11:58 am

    @scott m b

Dude why are you pay for Live if you don’t use it. You can still buy games and stuff from the Marketplace with a silver account. I guess that report about people not knowing the functions of their machines is correct.

  63. Charles on August 14th, 2007 12:06 pm

Paul that comment about Madden is so true. The 360 versoin bloooooooooooooooooows the PS3 version out of the compitition. How is the Cell Better. Everything is done better on the 360. I’m still not a believer Sony. I’m not being bias in any way as I was hopping the PS3 would give me just something good to say.

  64. Scott M. B. on August 14th, 2007 5:26 pm

Charles dude I paid for it before I realized it was crap, my bad I did not renew don’t worry.

  65. Gimli000 on August 14th, 2007 5:59 pm

    @ Mike Morgan

Clearly you don’t know a thing about computer design with a statement like “The 65nm Falcon chip runs faster than the current chip, so older Xboxes will run newer games slower”.

The CPU is fundamentally identical, just SMALLER. That means less energy to run the same CPU design, and less energy means less heat. Since the falcon chips are now available (look for the HDMI stickers) the reliability issues can once and for all be put to bed.

Fact is we are yet to see a technically superior game on the PS3. When that happens people might be able to justify the extra $$. But when you’ve got games like Madden 08 that run 50% slower on the PS3 compared to the Xbox I can’t see that happening. I suspect the PS3’s archaic GPU is causing a flow on effect for programmers because they are forced to turn the Cell into another GPU, something it is extremely difficult to do and very inefficient.

THERE IS A REASON NO ONE IS BUYING THE PS3:

    1. It’s too expensive.
    2. No decent games until Mid 2008.
    3. No technically superior games to date, and this includes the games coming out in 08.
    4. Blu-Ray is great - but any film enthusiast worth his salt would never buy a game console as a player.
    5. No rumble. Sure you’ve got an extremely tacked on motion sensor… and what games use this in any meaningful way?
    6. Online function is a joke - and so is Home: I don’t what to walk around a bland virtual world. I want to play games with my friends.

I have a new quieter 360 and am loving it. True it was my 4th replacement but I finally think they got it right. The PS3 just isn’t doing it for me. The online store is really quite bare for Sony to be a huge media company (and yes they are new at the online store, but Sony isn’t new @ online). I got motorstorm with my purchase, but it isn’t amazing like Sony wanted us to believe. I played resistance and the AI just didn’t seem too smart to me. Xbox has the best online and yes PS3 has the built in blu ray, but not a reason to buy the ps3 right now. I think the 360 has the best upcoming games and is the best choice right now. The controller feel weak on the ps3 and whenever I go back to the 360 I realize just how much I love the rumble feature. 360 is going to have an awesome holiday season I would tell you to wait about 6 more months to see if the PS3 will truly become the powerhouse they proclaimed they would be before the release. Who knows it may even be cheaper. I got a great deal on mine and decided to go ahead and get after E3, but with Lair (a game I was looking forward to playing) getting the horrid early on review, I’m thinking I jumped the gun. The only other game they have coming that I know of holidya season is heavenly sword. I played the demo and wasn’t impressed, but demo don’t always make the best example of a game…

I really don’t get how Xbox Live is any better than PSN. What extras does it give you that the PSN doesn’t have or won’t have in the future? Both offer demos, trailers, downloads, arcade games (PS1 games as well for PSN), and are both able to provide excellent and reliable online gaming. People need to stop bashing Home and saying that it isn’t gonna do anything for online. It’s just offering an online with a bigger community and interactive experience. I don’t see how Xbox Live is worth paying for yearly subscriptions. They are forcing you to pay for online. Sony leaves the online payments to the internet companies. Oh yeah, the PS3 has only been out for LESS THAN A YEAR by the way, while the 360 has been out two. I’ve got nothing against the 360, I just prefer the PS3. Your decision and you really can’t go wrong with either, just a matter of preference.

xbox360 is the daddy! I have them both and from a gaming stand point the 360 wins hands down (games wise) I do have a small amount of faith in my ps3 but up to now the games are crap, the graphics are shocking and they aint even in the same ball park as the 360! I just hope sony pull the finger out and show us the power of the ps3 soon, as I am getting a bit pissed of with my ps3!

2008 is PS3’s year. No one can say otherwise. 360 will have GEARS though at the end of ‘08.
By the time the 360 has the built in HD-DVD Drive the format wars will be over. BLU-RAY FTW.
