Barbara Morgan’s journey to become the first teacher in space is one of a milestone for space exploration, but the first part of the journey was a sad one because she trained alongside Christa McAuliffe, the astronaut/teacher who dies 21 years ago in the ill fated Challenger space shuttle mission that exploded over Florida.
Morgan is a primary school teacher who was picked by NASA to become the first educator astronaut, but after seeing the space shuttle explosion NASA abandoned its programme of letting civilians into space. So Barbara went back to teaching in her home state of Idaho, although she did vow to complete what Miss McAuliffe. It was 10 years ago when Barbara decided to leave her job and to pursue her career of becoming a full-time astronaut, and now her dream has come true as yesterday she became the first teacher in space. Six other crew-members joined her in this NASA Space Shuttle Launch.
