British funny man Steve Coogan has signed on to play sporting legend Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards, England’s ski-jump Olympic disaster area and national legend, in a biopic called, yep you guessed it, Eddie the Eagle, which is out next year.

If you’re not familiar with Eddie The Eagle, he was the first ever person to represent the UK at the ski jump, at the Olympics in Calgary in 1988. He was ranked 55th in the world and was completely self-funded and the sole applicant to represent Blighty.

After all his effort to get there, his weight, lack of financial support, long-sightedness and fear of heights affected his medal changes and he finished last. His good spirits and can-do attitude won him fans the world over, which led to a very brief pop career and now, this biopic.

Super producer John Heyman (A Passage to India) and father of Harry Potter producers David has always wanted to make an Edwards film and has finally got round to it with Steve Coogan starring. The script is written by Simon Kelton, with a rewrite by Sean Macaulay and Declan Lowney will direct.

With Coogan in a role which is filled with comic opportunities this film can only be one of the funniest British films ever! Shooting begins in January.
