Bridge to be rebuilt by end of 2008
By: Daniel Chubb | August 5, 2007 | Leave a CommentSpokesperson for the Minnesota Department of Transportation, Bob McFarlin, announced today that a replacement bridge for the Interstate 35W bridge could open as early as the end of next year.
McFarlin’s announcement comes on the heels of President Bush’s vow to “cut through paperwork” and “eliminate roadblocks” to ensure that the bridge is replaced as quickly as possible.
A bill passed the Senate Friday night which would authorize $250 million to replace the fallen bridge. If the House approves the bill today it will then move to Bush for his approval.
If all goes well, according to McFarlin, Congress will appropriate the funds by October of this year.
The recovery crew temporarily halted rescue efforts earlier today. It is reported that recovery resumed and continued until nightfall.
