In the news today is the shocking story of how a Head teacher of a primary school traumatized about 400 pupils by reading them the last page of Harry Potter. One pupil at St John’s School in Midsomer Norton reportedly had to cover his ears after teacher Carolyn Banfield started reading.
A child at the school said, “They didn’t want to hear it that much - they said that spoils the book.”
The school claims that the reading was used in a leavers assembly and reflected the theme of saying goodbye. They also said tat the reading would not spoil the children’s enjoyment and that the text was used as a way of illustrating how uncertainty can sometimes accompany new beginnings.
What do you think of this? I certainly don’t like the idea of making children listen to a book that many of them have waited a long time to read for themselves. Maybe Ms. Banfield was unaware that many of these children grew up with Harry Potter and so finding out where Harry’s journey has taken him will be very personal to them.
Ms Banfield is unfortunately on holiday at the moment and is unable to comment.
