300 was a defiant moment in film history, director Zack Snyder had taken film to another level and composer Tyler Bates came along for the ride. 300, accompanied by the soundtrack, is an visual and audio explosion for anyone who is watching/listening.
Tyler Bates, composer for 300, had already earned a little recognition for his work on Dawn of The Dead and The Devils Rejects, but he definitely stepped into the spotlight with his fantastic score for 300.
The score was released by Warner Brothers Records and dominated the first quarter of 2007. It is said that the soundtrack will be unchallenged throughout the rest of the year.
Tyler Bates’ music for 300 has been described as ‘grungy’ and I think that’s a great way to describe it. The score for 300 goes from dirty, dark pieces to full blown orchestral pieces that will have the hairs on the back of your neck standing up.
“If any listener is not prepared for an audio assault of the third kind, that listener may find their ears laying, bloodied and vanquished upon the ground.” Source
For those of you who have seen the film, you will remember the film opening with a softer, cautious piece of music (The Agoge, Track 2) but don’t be fooled into thinking the soundtrack will follow suit. As a listener, we are catapulted into a mix of ancient percussive instruments like the toumbek, daf and taiko drum, with forceful acoustics and are surprised when they blend together beautifully.
Bates mixes old with new as the ancient percussion instruments team up with electric and bass guitars. There are high-energy tracks where you can feel the passion and anger as you listen, but also some beautiful pieces that wash a wave of harmony over the listener. This soundtrack is a breathtaking piece of composing and Tyler Bates should be very, very proud indeed.
The soundtrack, released by Warner Brothers, comes in two versions: The original soundtrack and the Special Edition Digipak. They both contain the same cues and total running time but the special edition includes a tri-fold paper case, a handful of collectable, double-sided cards and a 16-page colour booklet. The Special Edition is definitely worth the extra money.
The soundtrack, like the film, tells a compelling ancient tale that you will find hard to not be moved by. Full track listing below:
