New Movie Death at a Funeral has been receiving rave reviews and, for a primarily British comedy, it isn’t all that bad! The Movie follows the after effects of the death of a family patriarch. At the funeral, a stranger (The awesome Peter Dinklage) shows up announcing he has a secret. Acid, or the like, gets dropped and everyone gets naked!
This is director Frank Oz’s first feature film since his ‘Stepford Wives’ remake. It stars Matthew McFadden (Pride & Prejudice) as Daniel a struggling novelist, who is the type of Brit who can’t decide whether to mourn for his dead father or be embarrassed about the whole thing - death is such an inconvenience for everyone.
The first alarm bells ring when the undertakers bring the wrong body to the house. With his mum annoyed she’s not in the Dramatic limelight and Daniels successful novelist brother Robert sticking the knife in, Daniel realises they are the least of his worries. He now finds himself having to dispose a second body.
The film manages to combine death and comedy all in one without either being too extreme. There are two central riffs in the family which provide some comic relief during the sad funeral scenes. Conservative Simon, fiancé of Daniel’s cousin Martha accidentally ingests a hallucinogen created by Martha’s brother Troy. He ends up a trouser-dropping lunatic who has no hope in hell of getting approvals from Martha’s father Victor (Peter Egan).
Death at a Funeral seems set to make genteel people cringe, at it does it’s job wonderfully. Daisy Donovan (Martha) puts in a great performance and Kris Marshall (Troy, Martha’s brother) is a fantastic comic actor that we should see more of.
Death at a Funeral is out this month.
