As mentioned previously, the $100 XO laptop is currently being mass-produced on a huge scale by manufacturers wanting to ‘computerise’ developing countries, making those less advantaged more familiar with the likes of laptops. But up comes the question: How would you change the $100 XO Laptop? And let’s tone down the 400gb hard drive comments everyone wants to see on the XO; after all, it is a charitable concept, which means it needs to be cheap.

Personally, I don’t see why the laptop has to be so ugly. I mean, it’s a great idea and I’m all for the kids learning about technology and that, but why do they have to design the XO to be so ugly? The green doesn’t add to the ancient Apple iBook-esque feel either.

Let us know what improvements you’d like to see be made to the XO’s.

Well, hard drive space is cheap enough that it wouldn’t be unrealistic to include even 50 or so Gigabytes. I thought that the issue was the reliability of hard disks. Flash and Solid State drives have both become a lot cheaper over the last few years, so I think that the amount of space they have could be increased significantly in the next few years. The other thing I might change is the Sugar OS. It has certain advantages (The Mesh network and other sharing capabilities) but I don’t think it gives them much of an idea of how most other computers store data (it doesn’t have much of a filesystem). Also they don’t see a lot of mainstream software this was, perhaps we could shell out a bit more cash to give them something that will run Ubuntu decently?
