Japan does send a fair number of its players into MLB, but there is a wide variety in their performance.
Some turn out to be MLB stars, whereas others appear to have never played baseball before.
MLB team owners have spent $160 million over the past year on bringing baseball players from Japan to MLB.
Japanese baseball players that come into MLB are very different from others. American players are usually selected through the amateur draft and upcoming stars from Latin America often sign contracts with big clubs as teenagers.
However Japanese baseball players come to America with long track records of proven success in Japanese baseball – so wouldn’t you think they would be a safer bet?
Well that’s just not the case as MLB teams who have gotten baseball players from Japan know too well – Japanese baseball players are a big gamble.

I think its about time we get someone other than Latin Americans. If we can’t get many North Americans anymore, I like to see Japanese players offer more diversity to the game (not racially)… I just dig their style of play. Baseball is getting too homogeneous.
