The Day Has Come: ‘$100 Laptop’ Production Begins
July 24, 2007 | Filed under Computer Hardware, Computers, Laptops

Designed for children in less economically developed countries, hardware suppliers have been given the thumbs up to start the production of the components for an apparent three million of these low- cost laptops.
The children from these developing countries will benefit from the ‘OX’ laptops which can perform necessary functions such as word-processing, designed specifically for use in these places.
Not only can the laptops be powered by solar or human energy, but the screen is bright enough to be seen in intense sunlight. Remarkably, they can also function properly at temperatures as high as 50 degrees, which was tested by keeping an OX laptop running in an oven.
A question arises: Should we be concentrating on introducing technology to these countries, where needs such as sanitation, water and healthcare are still issues? More on the OX, here.
