Psychologist Jerry Lang, got a straight in the final, 205th hand to beat Tuan Lam and win this years World Series of Poker’s Main Event, the $8.25 million first prize and his first WSOP bracelet.
Tuan Lam finished second for $4,840,981.
Yang said he was as a “true rookie” coming to his first World Series, however in 15 and a half hours he knocked out seven out of nine players from the final table.
On his route to victory, Jerry Lang accumulated a massive amount of chips as he became the first player in the history of world poker to hold over $100 million in chips. When they were down to the last 4 players, Yang still had $70 million in chips, a huge $40 million above second-place Raymond Rahme of South Africa.
Rather than coughing up the $10,000 buy-in to the poker tournament, Jerry Yang earned his seat by winning a satellite tournament with a $225 entry fee.
“So my total investment at this point is $225,” he said. “I’m living a dream, and all the credit goes to my God.”
Yang comes from a very poor background in Laos, so this is a great “rags to riches” story.
