Seve Ballesteros has won the British Open three times and he is also a two time Masters champion, bringing his career total to five major wins.
After such success, Ballesteros has announced that he will be retiring from professional golf.
A very emtional Ballesteros said: “For a few months, there was something confused inside me. My head said, ‘I think you should retire,’ but my heart was telling me, ‘You would be better to continue playing and competing.’”
“It was difficult for quite a while but finally I decided this year to go and try the Champions Tour. I went there, and the weather was nice, but I only played one tournament and I came back.
“That really made me think very deeply and really question either you continue or you stop playing. I made probably the hardest decision of my career as a player, and I decided to retire.”
Ballesteros is a winner of a record 50 European titles and he turned professional at age 16 in 1974. Ballesteros is now 50 years old. Little after 5 years of pro gold, Ballesteros won his first major title in the Open at Royal Lytham.
“I have worked very hard from morning to night and put all my energy and effort into the game, focused 100% and I felt that was enough,” Ballesteros said. “I have a number of good years left, and I’d rather spend time now with my three children and my companies and friends.”
Ballesteros has give the game of golf a lot and although it sad to see him go, we must thank him for his contribution to the sport.
