Ford Hybrid Airstream Concept HySeries Drive Platform Car

Ford is trying to push the limits when it comes to designing cool concept cars, one such design is the Airstream which is part of their HySeries drive platform. The Ford Airstream has a design much like a skateboard, everything is mounted low in the chassis, mounted in the middle of the car is a hydrogen storage tank, mounted on the other side is both the battery pack and the fuel cell. Towards the front and at the rear of the vehicle is a pair of electric motors.

If the look of this car is not for you, then you will be pleased to know that any design can be placed on top of this configuration, Airstream came up with this design which has the theme of American Journey, well that’s what Ford says anyway. The Airstream concept car is made for aluminum, and also has a self-propelled Airstream trailer as well.

I’m not sure about a couple of the design features though, take the front seats; they look like half Eggshells, looks like something out of the Jetsons. Getting into the seats is far easier than what you think as the sills of the doors are very low, and if these seats were to be used, there would be no chance of sliding around if you were to take corners fast, as the eggshells design wraps around your body.

For a Hybrid car of the future, the Airstream has to be up there with the best of them.

“f the look of this car is not for you, then you will be pleased to know that any design can be placed on top of this configuration…”

WHEW! That’s a relief! This design would look ugly in a blackout. And the dash looks like George Jetson took some LSD to design it.

How about a 2-seat sports car such as a Lotus Europa look-alike? Or Ferrari shadow? THOSE are concept vehicles!!! *Then* do the family cars and vans for bread-and-butter profits. Or finally do a “Ralph Nader Mobile” for us greenies – a car that gets a five-star crash rating at 70mph and still gets 50mpg?

No wonder Ford is loosing money so quickly. The engineers come up with a great idea, and the designers do everything they can to make it ugly and useless.
