Nintendo Wii Shortage in 2007 Holidays: making it look popular

Nintendo Wii Shortage
Although I do not doubt how popular the Nintendo Wii currently is, it does look like there could be Nintendo Wii shortages during the 2007 holiday season which is getting a bit of a joke.

I understand a few months of shortages, but now the Nintendo Wii has been out a while and with Nintendo’s vast amount of cash and know-how they should be able to ramp up production by now.

The senior V.P of marketing for Nintendo of America (George Harrison) said “If you see one, buy it. Don’t assume that you can come back later and find one.”

I would have to agree with others that this seems like Nintendo’s ramping up the Wii popularity rather than production.

Do you think they should make more of an attempt to meet the demand?

Nintendo is smart. They don’t want to build another manufacturing plant just to satisfy temporary demand. By next year almost everyone will have one, and they will have saved a butt load of money because they didn’t expand unnecessarily.

Nintendo doesn’t build the manufacturing plants. They come pretty much ready made in China. You can walk in one week with the blueprints for what you want and they’ll be shipping it out a week later. Nintendo already has several plants doing the work, but the demand is really high right now. I’ve seen a dozen Wii consoles come into the WalMart in Parry Sound, Ontario (a really small town) and they’re gone in under five minutes. I’ve seen two dozen PS3’s sitting at Costco every time I walk into the building. And they’re the same ones. You can leave a message in the dust they’re collecting.

If the demand drops off, and I can’t see that happening, then there will be a shortage. It’s not as though they’re doing it on purpose, like some companies we know of.
