80GB PS3 drops the dropped the PS2 emotion engine chip

Yesterday I wrote a post regarding the 80 GB PS3 and the fact that it is to include the new rumblaxis, a sixaxis rumble controller. We had one comment on that post which read “but the 80GB PS3 can’t play PS1 or PS2 games because it doesn’t have an EEC that the 60GB PS3 had, why would I want a PS3 that can’t play PS1 or PS2 games.”
It does seem as if the 80GB PS3 has taken a step back when it comes to backwards compatibility, as the 80gb Sony Playstation 3 has dropped the PS2 emotion engine chip and are now using a software based solution instead. This does mean that backwards compatibility with both PS1 and PS2 games are very limited, and you will have to expect many software updates in a hope to get the backwards compatibility to work properly.
