Xbox 360 will be the death of Sony PS3: gamers not bothered with video playback

We all know about the huge war that has been raging for a while now between the Xbox 360 and the Sony PS3, and we all have a view on it. What we have to look at here is the fact that only a small fraction of you gamers actually use your games consoles for video playback, and that people could finally cause the death of the Playstation 3.
The PS3 is a top quality games console, but Sony also promotes the fact that it is also a Blu-ray player. But the problem with that is only 30 percent of owners realized that they are able to use their PS3 or even the Xbox for video playback and that is a huge problem for the Playstation. The Xbox though is not affected, as they are a pure gaming machine, ok they support video playback but it was never about that with Microsoft.
The sad fact is the PS3 does not get the respect that it so rightly deserves, as you are getting a games console and a Blu-Ray player in one, and you have to remember that Blu-Ray is winning the war against the HD DVD Player.
Let us hope that people start to realize this and sales of the PS3 increase.

Had sony only put a dvd drive in and had a blu ray player add on, the base console would have been a ps2. The games are on BD. Resistance, a launch title, was too large to fit on a dual layer dvd. Plus if you consider looks of the system, in my opinion, an add-on like the HD-DVD drive for the 360 doesn’t look good. But thats just my opinion.
i dont have a wifi set up at my house, nor do i want a ‘next-gen dvd player’ why should i pay NZ$500 more for stuff i dont want or cant use? games are just as good on 360 as they are on ps3 (read as: better) and i dont give a flying rats arse about the wifi or bluray.
Sony are looking to keep their foot in the door with this machine for the next ten years - by the halfway mark, this console will be significantly cheaper and probably alot more people will be watching high def film or tv. I think they are looking at the long term plan. Games wise - I don’t think we will see the potential of the PS3 until next year.
You know, it’s interesting to read these posts. Most people are not paying attention to what else is going on the the “Tech” world outside their “fanboyish” lust for a damn game console.
Bob’s point is that having all your damn eggs in one basket is risky. Point: Putting a Blu Ray (BD ROM) in the PS3 drove up the cost and at the end of the day Sony didn’t give a damn about it in terms of gaming, they thought “hey there are over 100 million PS2’s out there what if there was 100 million PS3’s with BD ROMS we’d rule the HD format market.” The additional disk space was a great way to sell the idea to people and like using the Jedi mind trick on the weak minded, people shelled out $600USD for the PS3. What’s funny about all of this is that one of Sony’s own exec’s, Phil Harrison, has been quoted as saying “the PS4 would likely not have a media drive,” and within the last month or so Sony has talked about delivering content digitally (downloads). Why the hell would you need the damn BD ROM if you could download HD content?
Microsoft isn’t without fault here either, $179USD for a 120GB hard drive? WTF! On the the other hand Microsoft left it upto the individual what they wanted, “Make the 360 yours (J. Allard).”
Nintendo made the Wii tough and very user friendly, giveing us new and very innovative ways to interact with the virtual world. Sadly once you get past Wii Sports things really are not that interesting in the Wii world.
At the end of the day it’s about business and having an effective business model. Nintendo is doing what they have always done best and being innovative, but price friendly. Microsoft and Sony want you living room and their consoles reflect that with their multimedia functions. Who has the edge between Xbox 360 and PS3? Depends on who you ask, but it depends even more on whos ideas of gaming and multimedia delivery you lean toward.
Last point and I’ll bounce. @Gamehero… That whole PS3 anywhere stuff sounds really cool. But I’m thinking it’s actually just a security hole just waiting to be explioted. SO do be shocked if you get home one day and you PS3 is locked up… Just a thought.
Interesting points there Dooms. The only things I object to in your statement are the jibes about “fanboys” and people being “weak minded”.
I personally wanted a PS3 because I know there is room for development in the future, it is (up until now!!) a very reliable and well packaged machine which does not break, and as well as playing games on it I can watch HD movies which exude supreme picture quality - all contained within one box!! You may spend $600 on a blu ray player alone so I don’t believe the deal is all that bad. Sony have already impressed me with the sequence of downloads which have been released to add to the already great functionality of the console, such SD DVD upscaling which really is great. Also I don’t think that consoles will be solely reliant on downloadable naterial yet until the next generation machines. But even then…what if people don’t want to go online??
I also bought an Xbox 360 because, like alot of people I was genuinly looking forward to “finding out what the next gen machines can do”. And, after careful consideration (oh, all of about a nano second), I bought one. My only jibe is that it is not as reliable a machine and is more fragile than Sony’s beast.
Overall I am very pleased with both apart from the fact that there are more games required for both…but this will come with time. As far as putting one’s eggs in one’s basket…as I own an HD DVD for the 360 and am able to therefore make a judgement between Blu Ray and HD DVD, I’m not sure that we will see a victor in the way we did with VHS over betamax. They both present a high standard of piture presentation coupled with extra features.
In closing, if you have the money and you want it…why not. Don’t criticise people for forking out - get a job at Mc’D’s for a while and buy one yourself and then you can really form an opinion on the “Tech World” of late.
