Cameron Diaz is to star in Richard Kelly’s The Box. Kelly is best known for his directing debut which turned out to be a cult classic - Donnie Darko. If this film turns out to be anywhere near as successful as Darko was, Cameron Diaz will be a very happy lady I’m sure.
Richard Kelly says he wrote the script based on a short story, Button Button by Richard Matheson. Originally, Eli Roth was set to direct the film but now he’s become Hollywood’s Horror sweetheart so Kelly’s kindly jumped into the driving seat.
Cameron will play a young woman in 1976 who is given a strange box (no surprises there) by a complete stranger. She then gets told that certain things will happen depending on which buttons she presses. The box makes here wealthy instantly but she has yet to realise that opening the box has killed someone she doesn’t know.
In a quote from Vanity, Richard Kelly says,
“My hope is to make a film that is incredibly suspenseful and broadly commercial, while still retaining my artistic sensibility,” Kelly said. “I am especially excited to be working with Cameron Diaz, an actress I have always admired.”
