While on set for the movie First Sunday, actor/producer Ice Cube said that he is working on a big-screen update of the classic TV show Welcome Back Kotter. Ice Cube says of his new project, “It needs a little work, so we’re going to see. I don’t know if that’s going to be my next movie of not.”

Ice Cube is known for his comedy acting, though he has dabbled with some more serious context in his Barbershop films and says it’s something he wishes to continue with the sitcom. Ice Cube said,

“I always looked at the series as when it came out at the time, it wasn’t as sit-commy as it may feel, it was a little hard-edged for the time; you dealt with kids who some of them were skipping school and all of this kind of stuff that you didn’t really see. They would talk about real-life stuff, so I thought it was true to what the nature of the series is to do the same thing — to make it more of a dramatic feel, and not make it so: ‘Up your nose with a rubber hose.’”

What about John Travolta? Well, he’s given Ice Cube his blessing so who knows? Could a Cameo be in the pipeline?

“Yeah, I would love for him to do a cameo,” Ice Cube said. “I would love for all of the guys to do a little cameo here and there, but we’ll see. It’s funny to try to take a movie that’s like an icon and flip it the way we are, but I think we’ve got a good story.

What do you think of this remake? Do you think it’d be a great film? Or do you think it should be left as it is? Let us know your thoughts by leaving a comment in the box below.
