In the movie business, confirmation is always a good start - especially with big budget, popular movies so what could be better news than official confirmation on the plot of Star Trek XI?

In the Sunday NY Times, screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci revealed that this film will focus on “The earliest adventures of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock.”
You may have already assumed this but for once it has been officially confirmed.

The Star Trek movie had already been given a release date - that was before the script was even written! The writers of the movie told the NY times,

“What was a little daunting, was while we were writing it, they sent over a poster with the release date on it. We hadn’t written ‘fade in’ yet,” said Kurtzman.
Orci added, “We’ve never had a movie poster before we’ve had a script. That’s pressure.”

Wasn’t this officially confirmed by JJ Abrams about a year ago when he signed onto direct after Mission Impossible 3? Only saying as it’s not very likely the plot of a big budget franchise “reboot/prequel” would be officially annouced by the writers. Yeah here it is - http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117947019.html?categoryid=2267&cs=1&query=abrams&display=abrams

I am looking forward to this movie, but with caution. I just can’t see how anybody could compliment the Star Trek franchise by doing it the same service as was done by the veteran actors (especially Nimoy, Shatner, and Kelley). I will see it and hope it does well, but I hope that the powers that be offered the originals to in some capactity, take part in this movie. The original actors deserve at least that much respect for their contribution because they, and the foundation that their work layed are the reasons why any product of Star Trek has been so popular, and why this movie has a ghost of a chance for success. I hope Abrams’ project does well, but I also hope he won’t loose sight of humility as he’ll be filling some big shoes that Roddenberry broke the mold for.

I suppose I am looking forward to it, though I feel a little cynical. I have been reviewing J.J. Abrams’ work and have not found him wanting in his ability to entertain and intrigue. Intrigue, in fact, is the sorestly missing element from Star Trek over the recent decades. “To explore STRANGE, new worlds… to seek out new life FORMS, and new civilizations…” In a project such as this, it will difficult (not necessarily impossible) to add what is missing from Star Trek recently, as its purpose is to re-establish. I suppose the preliminary script is done, so I will buy a ticket. If it ends up being bad…well, no crime has been committed. We will always have the real McCoy.

I have been a Trek Fan for some 30 years. I have not watched ONE episode of Enterprise. Why? Because it’s in the PAST and has been done to death in the novels. Star Trek has always been about looking forward. I simply cannot see the point in wasting Millions of dollars on a film telling fans what they already know (Particularly since it’s been covered in a novel already).

Many Star Trek fans want to see a NEW series where we go on another 5 year mission some 50-100 years past The Next Generation. I am really disappointed they are wasting money on such an inane concept as Kirk & Spocks first meeting/mission. Pointless. Is it any wonder the franchise has been in trouble since Enterprise first aired.
