Sony PS3 Games Sales Disappointing: planning to beat Wii and Xbox 360
June 22, 2007 | Filed under Gaming

It was meant to revolutionize high-definition gaming, but so far the games sales show the Sony PS3 to be in 4th place (behind the Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 and even the Playstation 2).
The gaming sales have been reported to be “disappointing” on the PS3, but then this is just a start and with over 380 more games planned for the Playstation 3 by March 2008 things have got to improve sales wise.
Will promises of a price-cut improve the sale of Playstation 3 games consoles as the bulk of gamers are buying the Wii (not for high-definition gaming obviously).
I myself have all three games consoles as I am lucky enough to be able to, but what do the gamers think about the Sony PS3 lack of sales.
Speak up gamers, why has the Playstation 3 not sold like it was first thought?

I was a big fan of PS and PS2. I waited until PS3 came out so I could compare it with XBox. It comes down to a couple of things for me. The XBox is $200 dollars cheaper, and honestly, the graphics for PS3 and XBox 360 looked identical, and most PS3 games that were to be exclusive are being released on XBox. I think gamers can have the same gaming experience on an XBox that they can on a PS3, but for less money. Also on a smaller note, I was disappointed to learn PS3 did not have rumble.
People like to argue the whole Blu-Ray value, but I don’t have a need for a Blu-Ray player, and from my point of view the graphics on both systems are identical. I never was a big final fantasy fan, so I don’t feel the need to go out and get a PS3. I have also become a big fan of some of the XBox exclusives such as Dead Rising and Gears of War. With my other favorites such as Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, GTA, and most likely Metal Gear. I have no need to go out and buy a PS3. XBox is now also selling all my favorite old PS2 franchises, and on top of that I am really looking forward to Mass Effect as well.
Sony really hasn’t given gamers a need to buy the PS3. They need more exclusives like they used to have. Otherwise people will just keep paying $200 less to play the same games on XBox.
ps3 does not sell because sony is a retard!! just look at the software they build and one can find out their programmers are retarded. just look at the ps3 loss they suffer and one can tell their CEO is a retard (and the guy is a sir something???)
I think the 2 Major reasons are Pricing and lack of game. I am from India and here is costs RS 39,990 which is 985.218 USD. But I dont care i have still bought one. Once prices are reduced and games are there PS3 will vanish from shelves.
Because Price matters. I believe that the majority of gamers are kids and young adults. Therefore they lack the funds. It’s up to Mom and Dad or that part time job while you go to school. I will be getting married soon and my gaming most likely will become a very rare thing. I’m living my last days guys. If I had kids today I would buy a Wii. Maybe Xbox 360 as it has something for older people and there expanding there Kids line as well. Most of the arcade games are very innovative and promote thinking on both the Wii and the 360. Also why buy something more expensive when you can get that in a 360. Minus the blue-ray. You still get HD Downloads and HD-DVD option. The 360 does not force you to buy everything at once. The Wii is a very deceptive machine because by the time you buy the console, the extra controllers and all the perpetuals needed for basic gaming, you could have bought a premium 360.
“The Wii is a very deceptive machine because by the time you buy the console, the extra controllers and all the perpetuals needed for basic gaming, you could have bought a premium 360.”
How do you figure that
Wii: $250
Extra controller: $60 ($40 + $20)
total: $310
Xbox360: $399
Extra Controller: $50
Game: $60 (no pack-in)
total: $510
Thats ~$200 difference…Tou can argue about the retro controller (those are $20 each)…And the games are $10 cheaper
“The Wii is a very deceptive machine because by the time you buy the console, the extra controllers and all the perpetuals needed for basic gaming, you could have bought a premium 360.”
I really disagree with that. What do you need beyond what comes packaged with the Wii that is required for ‘basic gaming’? Extra controllers are admittedly more expensive for the Wii (factoring in buying a nunchuck with it), but really not required and if you think they are, then you have to factor that into the 360 costs as well.
Admittedly, I have spent a bit on extra stuff for my Wii, but I wouldn’t say any of it was required to play the Wii, any more than extra stuff for the 360 is.
You need games. Shiny black plastic and cool alone doesn’t cut it. Price cut is expected and will provide a temporary boost, but unless more games are released, the gamers will not come on.
Where is DMC4? Where is FF13? Where is Dragonquest? Where is GTA?
Has anyone wondered if the continued support for PS2 is actually hurting Sony? Now at least initially this seems counter intuitive because they’re making money from the PS2 hand over fist, right? But that’s not the point is it? They have spend billions on R&D and production getting the PS3 to market but no ones buying it. They need to sell PS3’s to make that money back. Maybe if they discontinued the PS2 like Microsoft did with the Xbox people would consider spending the extra cash. Of course their risk now is that those sales will probably go to the Wii because they’ve waited too long.
Simply put:
1. Price. Would you buy a PS3 with zero game or a Xbox360 with two games and one year subscription of LIVE for the same price?
2. Lack of must-have games. Heck, PS3 barely has any decent games.
3. The Blu-ray drive is moot when it comes to gaming. Other than extra storage space, it offers next to nothing in terms of gameplay. I’d rather spend that $200 on games. If I want to watch hi-def movies, I’ll get a stand-alone player.
4. Further to above, how many people do you know who have a 7.1 sound system?
5. The PS3 online service is a joke.
All in all, PS3 is packed with stuff that adds very little to the overall gaming experience but adds A LOT to the overall price.
Hmm… no thanks.
i think ps3 sales are fine, the p3 has no games is priced over 200 dollars above the competition and is still selling well, obviously not as well as the other two , but it’s far from a flop.
ps3 is selling well in europe and reasonable in japan considering there are no games there at all. I think people need to lighten up, Sony is listening to us, and is doing everything in their power.
They push technology i applaud that. They try to think out of the box, which is novel!, They give us a $800 product for $600 and i say thank you. The were arrogant but i think they are trying the hardest out of all the console makers right now to fix there mistakes.
why should i be happy with a wii, which is a cheap product! and play mario and etc….and im paying premium dollar for low tech!
Why should i buy an xbox 360 which is only trying to nickle and dime me! They release overclocked cpu’s which are at their limit, boast it’s more powerful than a ps3 (blatant lie)but omitthat the Xbox is an extremely unreliable console
Yeah but the Wii really only has a life span of about three years. In another two and a half years it will look seriously dated and all those millions of new gamers that Nintendo has been growing will be salivating for something better.
PS3 is a tombstone for Sony’s DRM format-focused agenda.
ATRAC3 killed the Walkman, now the expensive Blu-ray is killing the Playstation 3.
Don’t even get me started about UMD discs or the evil magic-gate cards.
buy the xbox, buy the wii. enjoy them, but they are both yesterdays technology, the PS3 is tomorrows. unfortunately, there are no games…but we all know they are comming, and they will all be next-gen
if you buy a wii, you get to wave the controller around and have a great time.
if you buy an xbox, you get to buy a HD-DVD player for it, and guess what…the HD-DVD is getting killed by BlueRay.
Buy a PS3, you get to wait for the games to come out. they are comming. one year from now, this wont be a topic of dicussion. come October when several games will be on the shelves…the PS3 will be selling like…well like something good
The last few people to post look like they took an unfortunate gamble with the PS3, just like Sony did. Unfortunately, Sony has gotten itself into trouble for making the console sell for way less than it’s worth.
They realised that the games and the technology are too expensive, so many cannot afford the extra games. This has left Sony without the helping income of platform royalties. Because of this and the fact that they cannot raise PS3 prices for obvious reasons, they have decided to hold back on the PS3.
They are trying to keep the PS3 from selling until it becomes much more reasonable to produce. So they are currently biding their time until they figure they can make a profit. Then they will do their best to try and reclaim the top spot, by releasing tons of awesome games that use the console’s full potential.
Microsoft decided to get a powerful console on a budget, while Nintendo pushed innovation way beyond what any company would have dared to do. In three years, while the PS3 tries to make a comeback we will see these two consoles update to each others standards with the next generation, leaving Sony’s bank-breaker in the dust.
calvin, youre silly…
that just didnt make any sense
The PS3 is not selling because it’s too expensive. Plain and simple. If you look around the gaming community, there are still people who think $400 for a 360 is too much. Ask them to spend another $200 on top of that? And for what - a machine that plays the exact same games, but fewer of them?
To be fair, however, the PS2 didn’t sell all that well at launch either. The PS3 is still a relatively young machine and has a long way to go before we’re talking about it in the same breath as the Sega Saturn.
My forecast? I suspect the PS3 will be this generation’s Xbox - which means plenty of gamers and plenty of quality games - but the 360 will be this generation’s PS2.
Ohh dont worry Sony fans …380 awsome games in the next 10 months..I wish they would just stop all ready its just sad. If they think a rush of crappy games is gonna save the ps3…Its not..Still nothing I want to play. Look around the PS3 is just NOT COOL..end of story
What did Calvin say??????!?!?!?!?!!!
the ps3 will win once blu-ray gets adopted which wont be too long from now and the price goes further down…production of the 65nm cell is underway
http://www.psu.com/node/7409 … which is way faster than microsoft is doing even tough they had a 1 year all alone http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070205-8767.html
the ps3 will succeed in the future…fannatic sony haters, save it. we already know the negative yall have to say… the ps3 is here for the long haul…and it might win but not by as much like the ps2 did killing everything in its path…and im a nintendo fanboy so…

This is for “V” and ‘Tim”. Sure you can use what comes in the box for a Wii if you plan on playing alone. Driving games so need the classic controller. You need to buy Component cables for a better look and all three controllers and times that by 3 for a complete set. I have 4 controllers for my 360 and that is it. And I bought all my controller used except for what came in the Box. Try finding a used Wii controller or a Wii at that.
I wanted to add that the article about the Wii not getting a bigger hard drive and that it would result in buying more SD Cards I think also solitifies my claim that even though the Wii is the cheapest in price, by the time you buy all the perpetuals which is all the controllers. By the way, why didn’t Nintendo just include that classic controller so you could have a complete set. Driving games with that Wii mote is just ridiculous. Unless you like playing by your self then buying extra controllers just makes sense. Just buying your second set alone is quite expensive. Then you gotta buy Component Cables for a better look. Add that up plus the fact finding used items are hard to find so your probably buying brand new. You should have bought a 360 instead.
