Blu-ray is kicking HD-DVD’s butt and with the recent news of Blockbuster choosing Blu-ray as its high definition format to replace DVDs things look bad for HD-DVD.
Now here is the bad news for Blu-ray, engadget is reporting about a potential problem with the disc media that is being described as disc rot.
Basically mould-like spots have formed and made several owner’s Blu-ray discs unplayable (open the windows then people and stop the damp), well joking aside this could be a big problem for Sony’s Blu-ray format.
Many people are claiming they are discovering spots which can’t be rubbed off on Blu-ray discs, we are not sure how widespread this problem is but it leaves you wondering how much damage this could cause the Blu-ray name.

You didn’t do much research, or you would have more of a story. The Engadget site merely points to the actual discussion going on the AVSforum.
“Not sure how widespread”??? Do you not do any research or just plagiarize engadget? The list of defective discs is limited to “The Prestige”, although there are anecdotal reports of possibly 2 others (those are debatable, as they’ve not been independently confirmed).
The disc manufacturer has been quick to replace defective discs. A Sony “insider” has indicated that the problem was caught and corrected.
And this is not a new problem relegated to only Blu-Ray — similar effects have been found on “old fashioned” DVDs.
Do you just hate Sony, or Blu-Ray? Or are you just a lazy reporter? Just asking…
exactly… AVSforum is a frickin’ joke these days, spread false rumors like Steven Speilberg’s movie coming out on HD-DVD which later Steven demanded an apology, then the 3 million HD-DVD players contracted to sell at Walmart. These guys are just a bunch of crooks.
Alphaman and Steve = Sony Employees. How can anyone, other than a Sony “paid to write in Blogs” employees, find this article “anti-sony” I don`t know. The article states the “facts” as they are known “at the moment”.
“Sony Employees”??? Oh puh-lease… Here, re-read this (that is if you ever read it the first time):
“we are not sure how widespread this problem is but it leaves you wondering how much damage this could cause the Blu-ray name.”
Totally non-factual speculation. The AVS Forum was very specific as to how wide-spread the problem is. BVHE, Amazon, and Sony jumped right on the problem — BVHE and Amazon replaced the bad media, Sony verified the cause and helped make sure the problem does not repeat.
Not widespread, no damage to the Blu-Ray name.
