Microsoft Xbox 360 Elite
With so many fans dedicated to their type of games system with the most popular being the Xbox 360, Sony PS3 and the Nintendo Wii. We thought we should compare a basic summery of the new powerhouse Sony Playstation 3 and the latest Xbox 360 upgrade (as it was out a while ago).

Xbox 360 Elite
The upgrade of the popular next-gen video game console has a 120GB hard drive (much bigger than before) and HDMI output which again is missed on the first release of the 360.

The Xbox 360 Elite has an excellent selection of Top-notch games and a couple of but very important improvements over the first model, what I do not like is the Noisy DVD drive and cooling fan on the 360, no built in HD DVD drive, no built-in wireless networking and the massive power supply.

Sony PS3

Sony PS3
This next-generation games console from Sony has great media features particularly an integrated Blu-ray player, quiet operation, no external power supply, online play is free, (UPDATE: media streaming from PCs and remote Internet access via a PSP thanks to firmware update), Wi-Fi and it may be more expensive but taking into account all the extra features it has that you have to buy separate on the Xbox 360 it then works out about the same cost.

What I do not like about the Sony PS3 is the lack of good games at the start of this consoles life, the HDMI cable is not included; no force feedback support in the controller and the Sony PS3 doesn’t upscale DVDs to hi-def resolution (UPDATE: feature was introduced in a recent firmware update).

Both Consoles Summery:
The Sony PlayStation 3 may be the most expensive, but because of its cool design and amount of features this console is perfect for people that want less clutter and more in the package from start.
The PS3 might not have all the greatest selection of games now, but give it another year and things will be very different.

The Xbox 360 Elite is not a must have upgrade for Xbox 360 current owners and its not got as many features as the PS3, but currently the 360 has the top-notch gaming and digital media features to make it the better choice out of the two next-gen consoles…but give the Sony PS3 some time and things could change a lot.

Actually, the PS3 does upscale DVD’s, as well as PS1 and PS2 games to 1080p quality. This feature was introduced in a recent firmware update and has been all over the news.

Additionally, this article doesn’t even bother to mention backwards compatibility or the PS3’s motion-sensitive controller, nor even bother to compare exact prices.

Its a shame you didn’t hear about the PS3 Firmware update 1.80 before you wrote this. It added up-scaling to DVDs, PS1 and PS2 games which you counted against it in your review. It also added media streaming from PCs and remote Internet access via a PSP.

  3. JD says:

Overall, a decent review but a few things were over looked and the statement about DVD upconversion is false.

The PS3 does in fact have DVD up-conversion to 1080p, in addition to 1080p upconversion of PS1 and PS2 games. Rumble is available for PS2 games, via a dualshock adaptor. True about exclusives but many of the games available for the xBox are or will be available for the PS3. Then there’s region free player and remote play, via any T-Moble hotspot, which lets you watch movies, tv shows, or play music over the internet from directly off the PS3 hard drive, which is user upgradable to 200GB, then there’s the media card readers.

Sorry guys and girls, forgot about the very recent firmware update we posted on a couple of weeks ago:

    Thanks for correcting things.

I would ask people to look at the AAA exclusive tiles being released for each console. Halo 3 is all I can think of for the 360 whereas the PS3 will soon have the next games in the Final Fantasy, Metal Gear and Gran Turismo series all of which are potential 10m + sellers. On the issue of exclusives the 360 has more (at the moment) but the PS3 has more quality.

  6. Tiki says:

Sorry I forgot to add earlier that if you are discussing HDMI it should be pointed out that the PS3 has HDMI 1.3 compared to the inferior 1.2 the Elite has. This is only really relevant for high end AV buffs but another notch on Sony’s quality belt.

  7. Bazzerk says:

Firstly good review overall its nice to read an unbiased view on things. However I would like to point out strange notion that you have to buy all this extra stuff for the Xbox 360 to be a games console which is exactly what it is and why most people who own one bought it in the first place. The PS3 has these extra features but what about people who just want the games console can they go I dont want this, I dont want that to reduce the price? The point is you can look at this both ways. Tiki the PS3 does not have more quality and you are deluded if you think it does.

  8. CAD says:

All I gotta say is this is the most dumbest comparison I have ever seen. Were you really trying to do a comparison or just write something. Really and truly the main reason for buying 1 of the 2 is to play “VIDEO GAMES”. Everything else is extra. So if both have pretty much the same graphic ability then your question is how much do I want to spend and do I have a HDTV. Because trust me with out the HDTV Many of the extra’s don’t matter anyways.

  9. Tiki says:

Explain yourself Bazzerk. Only a fool would think the PS3 isn’t a better quality piece of hardware than the 360 (without even mentioning faults and bad customer service) and how many AAA titles the standard of Metal Gear, Final Fantasy and Gran Turismo are being exclusively released on the 360?

  10. Jake says:

Just want to point out that MGS4 is going to be released on 360. I guess you can say it is of the standard of Metal Gear.
