big brother
We all thought it was going to be to good to be true that there was not going to be any racism on big brother 8 considering on the different backgrounds of the house mates in there. Well it has just happened yet again.

Student Emily Parr who is 19 years old has been removed from the big brother house in the early hours of this morning after she was heard saying “Are you pushing it out, you nigger?” to black house mate Charley Uchea who is 21 years old.

This incident comes after this year’s “Celebrity Big Brother” was overshadowed when Indian actress Shilpa Shetty was racially abused by other housemates.

Emily said she did not mean the comment to be offensive and Charley who had listed racism as one of her dislikes on her Big Brother profile said she had not taken the comment personally but was shocked at the language that Emily used towards her.

Channel 4 said the exchange was not screened live and was immediately reported to the senior production staff who took the decision to remove Emily from the house.

Emily understands why her part in Big Brother has had to come an end and she regrets what she said.

The word ‘nigger’ is clearly racially offensive and there was no justification for its use. Channel 4 said “We have removed Emily from the house to once again make it clear to all housemates and the viewers at home that such behaviour won’t be tolerated.”

The Commission for Racial Equality said it has welcomed Channel 4’s swift action.

This move will show everyone that racism must never be tolerated in any way shape or form.

I think racism is so wrong and needs to be stopped as soon as it starts even though it should never start but we know that racism is out there and there can be nasty people that do mean it or just like Emily don’t realise what they are saying. I am glad that channel 4 took her out of the house as quick as they did. I have a mixed race family members and also black family members and most of my family are Irish so to me everyone should be treated the same they are no different.

    I think it’s ridiculous!!

Emily has simply been a victim of Channel 4’s previous mis-management of Racism that took place during the last Celebrity Big Brother.

Whilst the word ‘Nigger’ is clearly offensive to some people surely it is dependant on with what context and in what situation the word is used. Whilst many black American rappers stand there hurling the word at each other with no problem whatsoever?

I personally feel Emily was simply treying to be ‘Street’ and C4 likes it or not what they have done is once again mis-managed racism!

Last night after hearing Emily calling Chanelle all sorts for kindly agreeing to let ziggy share her bed, I thought that was shocking and straight away I took an instant dislike to her, Racisim is given over not only from white people against black but the other way round, and against all other credes also. It is purely down to ignorance, sad, but unfortunately its life, no one can stop everyone in the entire world to become anti racial over night, but excellent big brother for dealing with the issue straight away, which certainly gives the viewers an insight on how it can offend, and will give the offender something to think about and hopefully change there ways. Like it done for Jade Goody, Jo and Danielle, although I thought they were bully’s not racisits.

I agree that racism is unacceptable in this and in any other context. I understand Channel Four’s decision to remove Emily from the house, but this is ‘Reality TV’. We have to accept that racism is a reality and by removing a ‘racist’ we lose the sense of ‘reality’ they create. Preventing Racism on a TV show does not address the wider issue - it merely prevents unaffected people from seeing what racism actually is and what it causes. The real problem lies in the cities and districts of the UK where racially motivated violence is threatening citizens of all ethnic backgrounds. This incident on Big Brother is not the racism some people have to face. If people want to see real life, spend a day in a South London borough and think again whether this incident really should be at the scale it is.
If anyone should be criticized, it should be Channel Four for creating such a sick and twisted ‘Gameshow’.

If A black housemate called another black housemate a nigger in the street term (acceptable amongst themselves only) would he or she been evicted?

What is this country coming 2?? she was hardly being racist as she didnt say it in an offensive way. it is totally ridiculous. if some in the house called some else a white bitch or whatever we all know nothing would be done. this country sickens me and everthing has to be politically correct. black people call themselves niggers so why the sudden uproar when some1 else does. im not saying its right and i would never use that word offensively but the decision to remove emily over it is truly ridiculous.

Here we go again, when are ‘ignorant white’ people going to stop offending people of colour and passing it off as a ‘joke’.
You don’t here black people calling whites ‘Honky’ or ‘White *****’
yet some white people find it all so easy to be offensive to a Black or Asian person. I also find when a white person makes a comment about a racist remark concerning a Black or Asian person they always seem to know what is offensive…how can they when they don’t have to put up with the remark! It’s just a ‘arrogant chip on the shoulder attitude’ from some sections of white society.
I am pleased that dumb ignorant B*$!! has been removed from the Big Brother House.

Yep INSANE, surely everyone who calls anyone, ”gay” or ”fat” must go too? Crazy decision to try and regain some faith that they are so respectable, but what about the Dianna programme that screen right before big brother last night…

Whilst black americans may use the word ‘Nigger’ as part of their ’street’ vocabulary it is well known that this is acceptable for them as they are claiming back an offensive word that has been used to oppress them for a number of decades and therefore turning the derogatry use on its head within their own race.

For a, white person to use it is entirely unnacceptable, channel four have not ‘mis-managed’ the racist slur used, if they were to let this go without severe punishment it may spur offence amongst viewers that are of an ethnic minority. To suggest that Emily is a scapegoat is absurd, no one in their right mind would use the term ‘nigger’ to someone who is black whether they are meaning to be street or not as you cannot judge how much offence they will take to such a degrading comment that until recent years was widely used to make black people feel as though they are second class citizens.Emily should also know better considering the uproar that occurred following celebrity big brother, if she was as intelligent as she believes the word would not have passed her lips.

  10. Does anyone else find it ironic that in an article about racism (or in this particlar case, racist language) the author chooses to refer to mixed-race family members as “Half-caste”.

Also had Emily have said “my N****” as opposed to “YOU N****” she may have survived a swift eviction. It may seem like a subtle and insignificant difference, but the undertone and meaning change dramatically. I think the punishment was a bit harsh (and quick), but racist language should not be tolerated regardless.
