I have to second everything that Jeffery Sargent said above. He said it better than I could.
I love reading stories like that. Second Life has so much potential but it seems all the news wants to talk about is the bad stuff. Not many people hear the stories like Jokkers’s and Jeffery’s. For example, I was absolutely floored when I attended the Best Practices in Education conference and heard the ways that real life educators from around the world are using second life to engage thier students in real world concepts. Not only is this a good way for reaching students that would otherwise “zone out” on a boring lecture but it also puts a lot of resources into the hands of the educators themselves that don’t get the support they need to teach OUR children. Perhaps this is the definition of a game, but it’s a darn good use of one!
No, Second Life is not a game. That would be like saying Firefox is a game, or Internet Explorer is a game. Second Life is a means of global communication and hosting of information, essentially a new kind of internet which is piggybacked on the old one.
A significant defenition of a game is the need for a directed purpose or goal. Second life has no directed common purpose - it exists and like life it leaves your purpose for being there up to you. Very different from a game. You can however play games in Second Life - as in Real Life.
Second Life is what you make of it, for personal pleasure or business use, the world of Second Life allows you to create your own path.
