By: John | May 26, 2007
The USNS Richard E. Byrd (T-AKE-4) is the U.S. Navy’s newest underway replenishment vessel which has recently been christened and launched from NASSCO shipyard in San Diego.
This ship is a great Navy Advancement for the United States, which will provide support for all activities overseas for over the next 40 years.
The 4th ship in the U.S. Navy’s 11-ship T-AKE class, the USNS Byrd will deliver petroleum products, potable water, spare parts, stores, provisions and ammunition to the Navy’s expeditionary strike groups, carrier and other naval forces.
This 689-foot ship has the largest flight deck and cargo-carrying capacity (10,000 tons) of any combat logistics force ship.
