Motorola solar LCD patent: charges your mobile phone by sunlight

The sun and its sunlight is all around us in the daytime and even when light levels are low there is still a lot of power that can be used from this in a natural way.
Motorola know this as they have just patented a way of charging a mobile phone using only sunlight.

The patent issued by Motorola is for an LCD (liquid crystal display) that also includes solar cells they are not only capable of charging the battery in a mobile and many other devices that have LCD’s as well.

The aim is a brave one, but if achieved would change the way everyone in the world has to charge their LCD gadgets.
The fact is if things work out we may never have to charge them again, as Motorola wants to develop a device that could remain charged indefinitely.

The light that passes through the LCD display will charge the cell phone (or other LCD device) thanks to one or more solar cells under the LCD.

The reason things like this have not been developed by now is because the reflective screen and polariser on an LCD would only let 6 percent of the available light to reach the solar cells, but now Motorola claims they have found a way for more than 75 percent of available light is able to reach the solar cells.

This is done by using polymer-disbursed liquid crystal or cholesteric liquid crystal in the LCD display rather than the current super-twisted nematic liquid crystals, which then means there is no need for a polariser or reflective screen in the LCD…problem solved.
