500 Million Webmail Users: Yahoo Mail, Gmail and Live Hotmail

There are well over 500 million webmail users around the world and just like search engines most of the users use services from just a couple of brand names which include Yahoo Mail, Gmail and Hotmail.

With Windows Live not long re-branding their new email beta service to Windows Live Hotmail, we wonder how their webmail service stacks up to the others like AOL mail, Yahoo mail and Gmail.

Well we found one article that went into this with much detail on techcrunch, which shows a chart that puts three biggest webmail brands in this order:

Webmail Users Compared:

• Yahoo Mail: 250 Million Users
• Live Hotmail: 228 Million Users
• Gmail: 51 Million Users

The Gmail Service I know of many of my family and friends moving over to Google Mail and this tells me that they must be gaining market share day by day.

With all the new web mail applications being launched from these brands this is good news from the users perspective as the old Ajax Free services even required page refreshes for every click.

The new applications have a much richer experience and when they are running smooth, they have the same feel and ease of use as a desktop client.
TechCrunch named Gmail as their favourite because of the consistently fast service and tagging emails made searching more effective, add to that the extra storage and being free makes it a hard service to beat.
