Toshiba ApriAlpha V3 Robot
We all know Japanese electronics companies most times get the best gadgets and tech first and true to the word again, Toshiba have unveiled some new robots that are designed to help out children and the elderly.
They are designed to (and can you picture this) help you at home or even the shopping mall by following you and the robots respond to your voices.
I wonder what my friends and family would say when they see my walking around my local shopping mall with my little (and big) robot pal with me.
I love some of the features of these robots, for instance lets say you walk away and lose your robot, he does not cry, he/she will call to you and respond to your reply.
If you move the robot moves and then stops when you stop, but even keeps a certain distance (he could teach my kids to do that)
All this movement is aided by the “ApriAttanda”, which identifies you with its visual sensor and high-speed image processing system.
Another robot will detect the direction of your voice and recognize what you have said from its six built-in microphones and multiple speakers.
One thing is for sure robots in time will get more and more like us.

It is interesting how the Japanese seem to come out with some of the earliest and most interesting gadgets - especially robots. The Time Magazine “Inventions of 2005″ issue had a section featuring robots, and the majority of them came from Japan, including the Toshiba “ApriAttanda” - see http://www.robots-dreams.com/2005/11/a_time_for_robo.html for more background.

There is definitely a major focus in Japan on robots for home use, especially to take care of children and the elderly.
